In all previous breeds, the efforts of breeders have been directed towards getting the fastest possible, big, strong greyhound, capable of looting, from a wolf or a deer to a rabbit. In each of these breeds, an increase below the limit indicated by the standard disqualifies. Here, the other way around. The aim of breeding is to obtain a subtle lounge dog.

Italian Greyhound, now recognized as an Italian breed, it is the epitome of grace and elegance. Such dogs are seen in the portraits of rulers from previous centuries. The love of the Prussian king Frederick II was well known, called the great, to his greyhounds. Even today, visiting the park of the Sans Souci castle in Potsdam you can see the graves of these dogs and hear historical anecdotes, how this tough warrior mourned the loss of each of his canine favorites.

General impression. Long body structure, the silhouette forms a square, and even the height at the withers often exceeds the length of the body. Front view harmonious, in a dissonant profile. At first glance, the dog resembles a reduced greyhound, especially Arabic - sloughi, the delicacy and elegance of the lines are brought to exaggeration, additionally emphasized by movement and a graceful attitude.

The Italian Greyhound is very fast, teachable, lively and easily attached to humans.

Head. Long, length up to 2/5 height at the withers. The length of the mouth is equal to half the length of the head. The distance between the inner corner of the eyes is equal to half the length of the head. The width of the head between the zygomatic arches is slightly more than half the length of the entire head. The cerebral part is flat. In profile from the frontal edge to the occipital nodule, it rises only slightly. Harmonious supra-supra arches. The lines of the bridge of the nose and forehead are parallel. Skin tightly fitting, folds not allowed. When viewed from the side, the tip of the nose is in a straight line with the bridge of the nose and extends beyond the rim of the lips. Front part of the muzzle unfolded both in width and length. It seems pointy. The edges of the lips are dark. Close fitting lips; the mucosa of the corners of the lips is not visible. "Cut” snout short. The length of the muzzle is equal to the bridge of the nose. Delicate skin, thin, with a small layer of connective tissue. The muscles of the jaw and ear area are poorly developed. Teeth delicate. Teeth white, straight, complete, well developed; scissor bite. The leading edge is slight. Small ears with fine cartilage, set high, well above the zygomatic bone, folded and carried tilted back to the nape of the neck; interior (entrance to the ear opening) exposed. Front section raised when listening, and the upper one is held horizontally ("roofing."”). Big eyes. expressive, round, but not convex. A dark iris regardless of the color of the coat. Eyelids close to the eyeball (dark edges).

Neck. Length in extended position (from the withers to the base of the skull) equal 2/5 the height of the dog at the withers. Clearly demarcated from the withers, slightly arched to the front in the lower profile. Dry, with tight fitting skin.

Torso. Length from the elbow to the ischium, less than the height at the withers or not more than the same length. Chest narrow, not very muscular. The width is equal to the width of the chest, it only comes to 21% height at the withers. The bridge is slightly protruding, lies on the line of the shoulder blades. Chest slightly sprung, reaching to the elbows, slightly less than half the height at the withers; its circumference at height 35 cm not less than 41 cm. The length of the back is equal 29% height at the withers. Withers not higher than the topline, narrow due to closely spaced elbows. The line of the back is straight as far as the dorso-lumbar arch. The loins merge gently into the back line. Abdomen strongly tucked up. Flanks of almost equal length with the lumbar region. Strong croup.
