Command for the dog – stand

Command for the dog – stand

Exercise it, indispensable for all working dogs, and useful and for the peaceful, it is also depressing. It consists in immobilizing the dog in a standing position, in place of, where because of the mud, dirt or other obstacles cannot lie down, but he should stand on orders and wait quietly for his lord.

We go with the dog at the leg and on command ,,stand!”, combined with a slight nudge of his mouth with the palm of his left hand, we stop it with a rope, which we lower to the ground, walking steadily and calmly on. Initially, the dog will want to, to which he was used to, come with us. We react to it with a slogan: "Stop!”In a firm tone, which makes us depressing. It is also possible, walking by some tree or pole, put a rope on them and walk away saying "stop!”. Initially, we walk away only a few steps and pay attention to the behavior of the dog, who is not allowed to occupy a position other than standing after our order.

This exercise is not easy, because it requires the dog to act contrary to the pack instinct ordering him to accompany the handler. That is why you have to be extremely consistent and calm. If the pupil is standing well, rather it should not be praised, because friendly sounds liberate him from a state of paralysis and depression and can be understood as a release from the compulsion to stand. In the same way, we are not allowed to recall the dog at a distance from the "stand" position while learning. At first, you can only walk a few steps away and soon get back to the dog. Usually he will want to meet his master. This cannot be tolerated. The disciplinary "stop" should stop him.

By repeating the command each time you try to change places, we approach the dog and stand by it for a while, we take the place on his right side - with the left foot next to his right shoulder blade. Then we can praise him; then we give another order, e.g.. "with me", „Noga”, or another and we walk away with him from the place, on which he previously stood. Only after a while we can release him by sending him forward and start playing or otherwise relaxing him.

The more confidently the dog obeys the order, the greater the distance and time you can move away from his field of vision and smell, and come back e.g.. under the cover of bushes from a different direction or side. Pies, who felt the separation a nuisance, he will, of course, want to come to you full of joy. We extinguish these fires with a sharp “stop!”And we go over to him. We line up next to him, as previously described and only after the command, e.g.. "they!” or with a few steps to the leg, we stroke it, we praise, we reward with a morsel and in general we behave as nicely as possible. It is about strengthening the dog's reflex not to leave the place after the order "stop!”.

This exercise is arduous, it requires a lot of patience and consistency in proceedings; they have to be repeated every few days, even when the dog is not making a mistake. It is very useful when working with a working dog, when it is sometimes necessary to stop it with a silent signal - without a word, just putting your hand to his nose - in order to observe the game or suspicious people. The dog should then execute the command efficiently on a muffled sound or gesture. However, you never have to refer it to yourself, but always return to the place for it, where he took the command. Exercises should be done first in areas not frequented by people, and only later on the roads, where the dog is exposed to all sorts of tempting excitement. The dog should stand or crouch in a different environment each time, that he would not mistakenly associate an order with some place or object, which he often stayed with.

Should be added, that "standing" for a long time is not the natural position of the dog and is tiring for him. The dog does not have the appropriate adaptations in the construction of the limbs, such as e.g.. horse, who can rest in a standing position.
