German model entered in the FCI register under the number 145a (28. I. 1964 r.)

Its name comes from the city of Leonberg in Württemberg. It was created as a result of the crossing of Bernards, waterwalkers and Pyrenean shepherd dogs. He appears as a guest at our exhibitions.

He is distinguished by a noble figure and good disposition - he is faithful and teachable. It is especially suitable for the role of the watchman of a larger farm yard, factory or villa. Of the large breeds, it is the least sensitive to adverse environmental influences and the most resistant to diseases.

General impression. Big dog, muscular, harmonious build and lively temperament.

Head. Carried quite high. The cerebral part is moderately arched, much less broad and tall than in St. Bernard's. Cheeks not very developed, so that the back of the head appears wider than the face to the eyes. The head as a whole should appear to be squeezed at the sides, deeper than wide. The leading edge is very moderate. The bridge of the nose is evenly wide, not concave, rather slightly arched (carbonos). Black nose. Nostrils not as massive and not as wide open as those of St. Bernard. Skin tight all over the head, no folds on the forehead. Muzzle of moderate depth, fairly even, not sharpened. Smoothly adhering lips, not drooping like St. Bernard's (therefore the dog does not drool). Teeth very strong and closely overlapping each other. Light brown to brown eyes (unwanted yellow), medium size, about intense, a gentle expression. Eyelids tightly fitting, conjunctiva invisible, white at the eyeball, not red like St. Bernard's.

Torso. Slightly longer than St. Bernard's. The lumbar region is strongly developed. Chest deep and not too barrel-shaped. Strong ridge required.

Front limbs. Not too high, muscular, with strong bones, simple, well resilient. The elbows are close to the body and extend slightly above the lower edge of the rib cage. Shoulders positioned obliquely. The feet are quite round. Palce black, connected by a fluid membrane (leonberger likes water and is a good swimmer).

Hindquarters. Thighs strongly muscled. Hock joint expressive and strong, strongly held, rather well angulated, not trees. Dewclaws are considered a fault. If any, should be removed as soon as possible (do 14 day of the puppy's life).

Tail. Very hairy (like a brush), constantly half drooping, never carried too high or curled over the back.

Robe. Medium soft to hard (never hairy), quite long, tight or slightly protruding, without parting. Despite the good undercoat, it does not blur the contours of the torso. Always simple; wavy yet tolerated, but curly or curly - unacceptable. It forms a beautiful ruff around the neck and breast.

Ointment. Light yellow, golden yellow to reddish brown with black (dark) masks are considered to be the best color. Acceptable dark (to black) ends of hair. There are also different colored varieties: sand, silvery gray (silvery). No black mask or lighter faces allowed. Specimens with large white spots should be eliminated from breeding. A small white star on the chest and a slightly lighter or white color of the toes are acceptable for now. The required color of the tail is the same as the general color.

Increase. The minimum height at the withers: psy 76 cm, suki 70 cm.
